Participants in this program will spend plenty of time outdoors during a range of weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and precipitation, as well as travel over uneven, natural surfaces. The Queens Zoo reopened to the public on June 25, 1992 after a delayed opening because of a shortage of operating funds. The second of three city zoos to be renovated and operated by Wildlife Conservation Society, the $16 million reconstruction focused on the zoo's initial strength as a showcase of American wildlife. Southern pudu are from Chile and Argentina, and are the world’s smallest deer. Pudu bark when they sense danger, and when chased, they run in a zig-zag pattern to escape predators. Our bald eagles were rescued and rehabilitated after unfortunate encounters with humans. They couldn’t be released back to the wild, so we provided them with a home.
