Music Theory Behind Guitar Modes. In music theory, a mode is a type of musical scale, with guitar modes being variants of these scales that result in different tonal characteristics. Music modes have roots in ancient music theory and are named after ancient Greek tribes: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian.
