Understanding Rest and Rhythm. One of the most important parts of learning music theory is being able to read the notes and rests in sheet music. Writing and deciphering melodic lines will be significantly easier when you can read piano music in standard notation. Two of the most important parts of standard notation are notes and rests.

In music theory, each note in this scale has what is called a scale degree name, which describes the relationship of that note to the tonic(1st) note.
